Are you really happy?

October 11th, 2006

Most of us anticipate that the changes in our lives will give us happiness after we accomplish or achieve them.  We keep living in hope that new things will lead to greater happiness and when it does not happen, we tend to get unhappy and depressed.

Did you know that the World Happiness Survey placed the United States at 46th among the happiest countries in the world while India was ranked second? Indians have got more facility and comforts than most countries, why aren’t they happier? It appears that the people in most advanced countries often are the least happy.

These advanced countries have a lifestyle based on consumerism and the acquisition of wealth and possessions and this forms the basis of happiness. We believe that surrounding ourselves with things we need will lead us to happiness. In our society it is believed that happiness can be found if we purchase the latest appliance, gadget, or a bigger house.

While in poorer countries, a slow and simple agrarian lifestyle often leads to higher levels of happiness. These people are not busy over-working and trying to acquire material things to pamper or thrill their mind and body. They are often happier and friendlier while making the best of what they have.

This would suggest that real happiness is not found by acquiring temporary objects, or possessions. Happiness is a state of mind. Happiness depends more on your disposition and outlook to life and your inner self.
