Work towards authentic happiness (Part B)

December 14th, 2006

The best way to achieve authentic happiness is by always being surrounded by the people you love and your favourite people. It helps give you a sense of belonging and lets you engage in mutually enjoyable activities, all of which can buffer you from stress and depression. Research at the University of Illinois, Unites States of America, has found that people who are consistently very happy have stronger romantic and social relationships than unhappy people. This proves how important it is to be around the people you love or the people who are very valuable to you.

This is an ideal route to authentic happiness. Most importantly authentic happiness can be achieved by being an optimistic person. You should always look at life with a sense of hope and sanguine. You should shun away all negative thoughts and expect good and positive things to happen. By expecting to have a great day and by identifying negative thoughts, and countering them with positive ones, you will stop looking at the darker side constantly. This is the most effective approach to authentic happiness.

A simple facet of happiness

Authentic happiness is an emotion which is influenced by the things we do. According to scientists, authentic happiness comes from work and leisure activities that engage your skills and enable you to get caught up in what you are doing. Thus to be happy and content you should always be engrossed in something, be it painting, reading which helps you lose track of all that was going on around you, including all sense of passing time. Scientists call that “the flow,” that is, a state of mind in which you become absorbed in an activity because it is challenging, enjoyable and rewarding. The more you go with the flow” the more exhilarated and happy you feel. Thus the only way to authentic happiness, is by finding an activity that excites you, like reading a thriller, writing, painting, learning a new language, or creating something new and throwing yourself into doing it.

The easiest technique to work towards authentic happiness is by doing things differently. Doing the same thing the same way, day after day can leave you feeling very agitated. Any little thing that disrupts your pattern provides a wake-up call and helps you be more present in your daily life. Psychiatrists suggest that doing small things like getting a new haircut, hitting the gym at a different hour or moving your bed across the room helps you get a new view every morning, making you feel very happy and rejuvenated. Making daily chores exciting and different help us work towards authentic happiness.

December 12th, 2006

The effortless ways to happiness include being positive and looking for the good in every aspect of life. According to experts, the secret to true happiness or one of the ways to happiness lies in making a habit of looking for the good and positive in your life. For instance, just by taking a compliment for your outfit in the positive way shows how you conduct the gratitude ritual with an optimistic approach. Some experts recommend that we should write down our ‘five’ happy things before going to bed, so that we drift off to sleep and end our day on a positive note. This positive energy will help us look forward to the next day with complete buoyancy, cheerfulness and optimism. By recollecting our good thoughts or new or good experiences of the day, help us feel good and positive about life instantaneously.

There may be many ways to happiness, but the simplest technique to be happy is by having a positive attitude towards our selves. Being too critical will never take you to Blissville. The things that you tell yourself have an impact on your mood and body. The negative thoughts trigger the release of stress chemicals that make you feel worse. To end the self-sabotage, make a decision to be nicer to yourself. Pay close attention to your thoughts and when you find yourself having negative thoughts replace it with positive ones. For example, if you make a mistake, stop the ‘I am so stupid’ message, and replace it with ‘Everyone makes mistakes and I’ve learnt from this one. Good for me.’ In this way we not only get rid of the negativity within us, but also begin to have a positive approach towards life which the one of the best ways to happiness.

Apart from finding a solution to all our problems or inventing challenges for ourselves, one of the greatest ways to happiness is having a positive attitude towards life and thinking positively. One should not be an ostrich who hides face in the sand and thinks everything is peachy when it is not. You should always look at life with a sense of hope and optimism.

In one study done at the Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Unities States of America, happy subjects were more hopeful about their wishes than their less sanguine peers. It is not that their wishes came true more often; they just expected them to come true. The secret to turning your outlook around is to start thinking positively right now. It is one of the smartest ways to happiness. By expecting to have a great day, by identifying negative thoughts, and countering them with positive or neutral ones, and by embracing challenges instead of fearing them, you will stop looking at the darker side constantly, and will also grow as a person.

December 7th, 2006

Mastering the ‘Art of Happiness’ is the key to living a beautiful and successful life. Yes not money, not power, but happiness. This is that elusive object which we are all running after, all yearning for. Happiness is very difficult to define and put into a few words, but it is essentially that state of mind where we are completely satisfied with us, and our lives, and we are at peace with ourselves.

As simple as this may sound, the art of happiness is the most difficult state to achieve. Sages and philosophers have been trying to find the perfect solution to achieve this art of happiness for millions of years. However the only way to master the art of happiness is to be happy with oneself. If I am happy with myself, my work, the people around me, then I am happy, and the simplest way to master this unique art of happiness is to ‘smile’. Yes, smile! If you can smile through all the adversities and problems in your life, then you have perfected the art of happiness. This state can be achieved only when you have a positive attitude.

The art of happiness cannot be achieved if you are pessimistic, and have a negative attitude. It is only when you can smile even in the face of adversity or when the chips are down, even when things are not exactly going our way, that you can be happy. The most important lesson that has to be learnt from this is to have confidence in yourself, and give yourself respect.

Pursuit of happiness in a marriage (Part 2)

December 1st, 2006

A happy and successful marriage today entails partners who deserve each other. They are a perfect match intellectually, physically and emotionally.  Pursuit of happiness in marriage also includes the achievement of material comforts that ease the way for two people to share a lifetime together.

Pursuit of happiness in a marriage depends on making the right choices. Since ancient times marriage has been a source to attain real happiness and fulfillment in life. Marriage brings a sense of completeness in both men and women. This philosophy is reflected in all religions and isms that teach us to look deeper within ourselves. Marriage is the most natural institution formed by man. Evolution has made humans realize their gender differences and compatibility. Marriage has given them a formal bonding and an atmosphere to raise their children.

The pursuit of happiness through marriage is therefore a phenomenon that has come down through generations. It is a time-tested and proven theory which holds true even today because it is result of not human actions but human belief. It is an intrinsic aspect of human practicality. That is why, while many customs have come and gone with civilizations, marriage has lasted over centuries. Man’s pursuit of happiness is incomplete without the sanctity and bliss of a wedded life.
