Art of happiness lies in you

November 16th, 2006

We are the makers of our happiness

Do you know what is the most elusive and coveted thing in the world? The one thing that everyone hankers for, but very few actually manage to get it. For most people in this world, the most coveted thing in this world would probably be a material object, and in order to achieve that, the most desired object in this world has become money. However, what everyone actually yearns for and wants is not these material objects, but happiness. We need to realize this eternal truth ourselves – that the art of happiness lies in us.

We want material comfort because we think that by obtaining these objects we will be happy. However, does anyone actually know what is the art of happiness, how do we go about achieving this? Money and material goods certainly do not bring in happiness. How many celebrities have committed suicide in spite of having every possible riches simply because they could not master the art of happiness?

People from all over the world, travel to the Himalayas to search for this art of happiness. However, the simple truth of the matter is that the ‘art of happiness lies in you’. Yes, each one of us can master this art of happiness ourselves without having to do penance or by living an ascetic’s life. We are the makers of our own happiness, and we also have the power to master this art of happiness ourselves.

7 WAYS TO HAPPINESS (PART B)

November 15th, 2006

Key to a happier life

  1. Eat breakfast. According to dieticians, one of the smartest ways to happiness is to start your day with a balanced meal which includes protein and carbohydrates.  If you skip breakfast you essentially deny your body a chance to kick-start the day positively and this adversely affects your mood and emotions.

  1. Exercising. Exercising boosts our mood and makes us feel energised and happier. However, studies have proved that exercising near others, for instance, running in a park or on a treadmill near someone improve our mood more than being out alone. Watching others inspires us to work out harder and longer, making us feel more committed to the activity, which in turn helps us feel better.
  1. Instil a sense of purpose. One of the easiest ways to happiness is to instil a sense of purpose or give a meaning to our life. Research at an American University has found that having a sense of purpose is a significant predictor of happiness and life satisfaction. To create a vision of what is meaningful, it is important to ask yourself what is it that makes you happy, what matters most to you or what do you want to be remembered for.
  1. Penning your thoughts. Psychiatrists believe that jotting down bad feelings, memories, or stressful thoughts on paper can help us get out of depression faster. This is one of the effortless ways to happiness.

7 WAYS TO HAPPINESS (PART A)

November 14th, 2006

Key to a happier life

Research has proved that, “happiness is like a cholesterol level- genetically influenced but also influenced by the things we do.” Study shows that financial status, external circumstances and life events account for no more than 15 percent of our happiness quotient, thus the true way to happiness lies within us. In other words, we can develop a sunnier disposition by changing our attitude and introducing certain activities or changes into out lives. Consequently, the seven ways to happiness, are:

  1. Find a solution. According to psychologists, the biggest difference between happy and unhappy people is that happy people think of solutions, not problems. For instance, if you are broke days before your pay day or your weekend getaway has been cancelled, don’t fret. One of the best ways to happiness is to keep smiling and remain happy. Finding a solution not only boosts your confidence and adds enthusiasm to your spirit it also bolsters your ability to bounce back from everyday adversity without a “woe-is-me” mentality.

  1. Put on a happy face. It is strange but very true: studies have proven that just pretending to be cheerful, speaking in a happy tone, and walking confidently can actually trigger joy. This is one of the simplest ways to happiness.

  1. Invent challenges. Research has shown that turning dull and mundane tasks into challenges can make life look and feel excellent. Inventing challenges for ourselves is one of the greatest ways to happiness. Just by meeting a deadline, pleasing your boss or pushing yourself forward and working harder, will put you on a high and make you feel very energised and happy.

What makes us happy? Really happy? Even when have what we desire, we are still dissatisfied and realize that our happy moments too far and few between. We need to find the way to happiness. Genuine happiness comes from within. It is falling in love with yourself and experiencing true emotional freedom.

We are not talking about vanity or narcissism. Falling in love with yourself is about how you treat and see yourself. It is this magic of self-love that will radically change your life.

The way to happiness comes from healing childhood wounds. Many of us may have had a happy childhood still carry a lot of traumas like neglect, rejection or criticism. These traumas manifest themselves in our adult life through our partners; friends and employer come as obstacles in our way to happiness. The Power of Happy Thoughts

November 9th, 2006

It is believed that in a day we have around 60,000 thoughts that come and go through our mind. It is also believed that these thoughts have a great influence on our behavior and our relationships. It is a known fact that happy people have more happy thoughts as compared to unhappy people.

Happy thoughts help us to know what to do. Happy thoughts give us clarity and confidence. With happy thoughts we can pave our own way rather than follow some one else.

Unhappy thought like jealousy and anger undermine our inner strength. They take away our power to think and act effectively under adverse circumstances.

When we let happy thoughts into our mind, we end up creating happy and joyous perceptions which in turn lead us to happy events. Happy thoughts help us to create an inner peace and calm. We also influence the people around us to create a happy environment.

While unhappy thoughts made us afraid and we tend to push away people. Leaving us alone and making us feel unhappier that what we originally were.

The path to leading a happy life is through happy thoughts. Happy thoughts help you carve your own niche and ensure that you build a more stable foundation for yourself. With happy thoughts, you are in control of your life rather than life controlling you.

The Happiness Factor

November 8th, 2006

If you analyze people’s actions, you will conclude that they all are in search for happiness. Going to the movies, eating in a restaurant or going to a party are motivated by the desire to be happy. Sometimes the movie is not interesting, the food is not good and the party is boring. Then the search for happiness continues. Maybe the next time the search for happiness will be more successful. If that happens then the activity is sought again in order to repeat the happy feeling.

We keep flitting from one action to another in search for happiness.  Sometimes in our search for happiness we become selfish and hurt other people, sometimes deliberately.

No matter what the activity is, at the moment that happiness is experienced, something happens. The thinking process stops. Worries fade away. There is inner peace. In this vast peace we feel happy. It is not the object gained or the successful performance that brought this feeling. It is something internal and independent of the outside world. We feel momentarily like our search for happiness has ended.

When you gain the ability to have a quiet mind under all circumstances, you will enjoy constant happiness. This is quite attainable, but to gain this peace and happiness you need to work towards it. By making the first step today, your search for happiness will yield results and happiness will start filling your life.

The Formula For Happiness

November 6th, 2006

Did you know that psychologists have now come up with a formula for happiness? Psychologists led by Professor Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania  have a formula for happiness.

According to them, the formula for happiness is pretty simple: Pleasure + engagement + meaning = happiness.

In order to be happy we need pleasure in our lives. We need both small and large pleasures in live. Small pleasure can be achieved from eating a bar of chocolate or smelling a flower. While larger pleasures are found in success and love.

We also need engagement to be happy. Our lives must include activities that capture our interest. There are times when we forget how time passes because we are so engrossed in what we are doing. This happens because we are happy when doing that activity.

There are some who would deride this formula for happiness. But I think it is useful in our pursuit of of happiness. We all need reminders that being happy is an active choice and we must take action everyday in our lives to achieve happiness.

If you are happy most of the time, then share your own secret formula for happiness with others. But if you are not happy then take time to consider this formula for happiness and how you can apply it to your life. You can live a happier life with the help of the formula for happiness.
